Expression of Interest for General Dentists, Endodontists, Pedodontists, Orthodontists, Prosthodontists, Periodontists and Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeons

  1. Introduction

The CDSA Professional Conduct Department (PCD) is responsible for investigating all written complaints against regulated members. Pursuant to the Health Professions Act, the Complaints Director has the authority to resolve, dismiss or refer the matter to a hearing.  The Complaints Director utilizes the expertise of Regulated Members in the function of Dental Experts who are instrumental in assisting the Complaints Director in ensuring decisions are reasonable, fair, and informed.

The role of a Dental Expert enhances trust and accountability for both the public and the profession in ensuring safe and reasonable treatment is being rendered.

Regulated Members are selected from many dentistry disciplines which include General Dentists, Endodontists, Pediatric Dentists, Orthodontists, Prosthodontists, Periodontists and Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeons to fill the function of a Dental Expert.

Successful Regulated Members possess above average writing skills, the ability to conduct a thorough assessment of the investigative material and provide an objective, reasonable, fair and unbiased Dental Expert Report.

CDSA values transparency, fairness, and credibility, therefore the following process with be utilized to select successful candidates.

  1. Selection Process

PCD is seeking to add Regulated Members to the Dental Expert Portfolio in the following Dentist Classifications:

  • General Dentists,
  • Endodontists,
  • Pediatric Dentists,
  • Orthodontists,
  • Periodontists, and
  • Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeons

General Dentists, Endodontists, Pediatric Dentists, Orthodontists, Prosthodontists, Periodontists and Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeons are invited to express their interest in fulfilling the role of a Dental Expert and are required to follow the requirements within Phase 1 – Expression of Interest.

Phase 1 – Expression of Interest
Interested Regulated Members will provide a cover letter addressed to the CDSA Complaints Director and shall not be longer than two pages.  The cover letter shall include formal education, number of years in the profession, your experience and training in a variety of dental disciplines, and why this opportunity interests you.

Posting Closing Date: All submissions must be received by the Complaints Director no later than July 31st, 2023.

General Dentists, Endodontists, Pediatric Dentists, Orthodontists, Prosthodontists, Periodontists and Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeons interested in submitting their Cover Letter must send their submission documents to Professional Conduct Department Investigations Coordinator, Sue Crawford, using email: scrawford@cdsab.ca or you may send your information via Canada Post.

Phase 2 – Screening
All submitted Regulated Members cover letters will be screened and reviewed by the CDSA Complaints Director and PCD Investigations Manager for suitability to move forward in the process.

The screening phase is comprised of:

  • Reviewing the regulated members cover letter,
  • Validating the regulated members education, specialized training, and experience,
  • Confirming the regulated members are currently registered within Alberta,
  • Verifying the regulated member is up to date with the mandatory continuing education credits mandated by the CDSA, and
  • Reviewing of past and/or present complaints received by PCD to determine whether there are any bias or conflict of interest concerns.

Phase 3 – Interview
Regulated Members selected to move forward onto Phase 3 will be notified by the CDSA Complaints Director to partake in an interview conducted by the CDSA Complaints Director and Investigations Manager.

The purpose of the interview is to assess your approach to reasonableness, fairness, objectivity, potential bias, and ability to work within strict timelines.

Phase 4 – Selection
Selected Regulated Members from Phase 3 will be forwarded to the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) and President of the CDSA for final review and ratification.

Once the CDSA CEO and President have ratified the selections, the successful Regulated Members will be notified by the CDSA Complaints Director.

Ratified Regulated Members will enter into a contractual agreement outlining hourly wage commensurate with specific skill set and experience.

Following a signed contractual agreement, the Regulated Members will move forward to Phase 5.

Phase 5 – Training
Ratified Regulated Members will participate in a one-day training session facilitated by PCD In-House Counsel, Investigations Manager, and the Investigations Coordinator. The Regulated Members participating in Phase 5-Training will be compensated as per their agreed contract with the CDSA.

The purpose of the training session will provide several learning objectives including, but not limited to:

  • Regulatory Legal Overview,
  • Overview of the complaints process,
  • Role of the Dental Expert,
  • Duty to be transparent, reasonable, fair, objective, and unbiased.
  • Conflict of Interest,
  • What is the standard expected of an Alberta Dentist,
  • Report writing,
  • Sourcing of relied upon information,
  • Importance of relevant information and evidence,
  • Administrative and operational processes.
